ILGA-Europe needs a dynamic person with strategic vision to lead our communications work at a time when Europe is at a cross-road. We have more than ever a need to develop strong narratives on equality and to articulate a compelling vision of inclusive and diverse societies. By joining ILGA-Europe, you’ll have a unique opportunity to lead on developing a strong narrative to set a progressive agenda for the next five years at European level.

The Communications Director will be leading on the development and implementation of communications strategies that advance ILGA-Europe’s organisational goals and messages, and amplify ILGA-Europe’s advocacy, movement building, organisational development and fundraising work. The person will be expected to devise multi-channel communications strategies, including media and public relations, online and social media, communications with membership and campaigning, targeting our wide range of audiences – including key decision makers at European and national level, LGBTI and human rights activists and allies,  the general public and new audiences (such private sector). The person will lead thinking on message development for the organisation, will develop and implement communications strategy to ensure effective engagement and outreach with ILGA-Europe membership, and will actively contribute to developing and implementing ILGA-Europe’s communication and outreach strategy with individual donors. The person will also be expected to lead on developing and maintaining strategic partnerships with key media outlets at national, European and international levels; act as a spokesperson for ILGA-Europe with media, in conjunction with the Executive Director; and develop a strategy to shape the public conversation about LGBTI issues at European level.

Candidates should be strongly committed to working for human rights and equality for LGBTI people, and have proven competencies and demonstrated experience in:

  • Advancing organisational goals and messages through a holistic communications strategy, including media and public relations, online and social media, internal communications and production of materials, and campaigning
  • Shaping the public conversation about an issue through the development of effective, appropriate and creative messaging
  • Developing and maintaining strategic partnerships with key media outlets at national, European and international levels, with a view of ensuring a very high profile of an organisation and an issue

Qualifications, experience and other requirements are: 

  • Proven commitment to and interest in the rapidly changing LGBTI equality movement and a working knowledge of LGBTI issues, or related human rights issues and social justice movements
  • Demonstrated ability to respond quickly and strategically to emerging situations
  • Excellent interpersonal and public speaking skills, and experience in representing an organisation in a variety of settings, including the media
  • Excellent writing skills with a strong capacity to tailor the tone, content and form of written output in line with the intended audience (in English, proficiency in other languages would be an asset)
  • Demonstrated ability to produce high quality materials for a range of audiences and outlets (e.g., opinion pieces, speeches, press packs, social media content)
  • Proven experience of using social media channels within a communication strategy to engage audiences and stimulate awareness, action and activism
  • Understanding of the role of communications in driving and supporting organisational fundraising
  • Demonstrated experience in staff and budget management
  • Strong problem solving and decision making skills
  • Demonstrated capacity to adapt to rapidly changing environments, to think creatively and to find innovative ways to respond to emerging organisational needs
  • Capability to take initiative, to plan and work independently, while being a strong and dependable team player, and work well with others at all levels of the organisation
  • Ability to prioritise multiple tasks and meet deadlines, to balance long-term goals and day-to-day demands
  • Ability to work as part of a diverse team, and maintain excellent working relationships, in a high-paced environment
  • Sensitivity to working in a multicultural and diverse environment and commitment to promoting respect for equality and diversity, and ability to implement diversity into your everyday work
  • Willingness to relocate to Brussels and travel in Europe
  • Experience of working with NGOs and grassroots organisations (highly desirable), preferably in the field of LGBTI human rights and equality
  • Flexibility with work schedule; this position requires frequent evening and weekend work to respond to breaking news.

Employment information

Salary scale: Euros 64,441.27 to 69,713.73 in annual increments, starting at the beginning of the scale. The organisation has a generous remuneration package, including contributing to local transportation costs, luncheon vouchers, hospitalisation insurance, a pension scheme for employees and ‘family friendly’ policies. Relocation support from within Europe to Brussels will be given where appropriate.
